Prometric to conduct Soka University's 2025 general entrance exam (later period) using computer-based testing at test centers in six cities nationwide
This is the first time that a nationwide general entrance exam for private universities will be conducted using the CBT method at a test center *1
On March 9, 2025, Prometric Japan Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: James Hagenbucher, hereinafter referred to Prometric) conducted the 2025 general entrance examination (second semester) for Soka University (Hachioji-shi, Tokyo, President: Suzuki Masashi) using the computer-based testing (CBT) method at seven test centers nationwide. Candidates in six cities across the country (Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka) took the exam, which was completed without any problems.

Background of the introduction of CBT
Since 2020, the introduction of computer-based testing (CBT), which can be taken anywhere, anytime, has been increasing. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has made recommendations and the National Center for University Entrance Examinations has made digitalization of university entrance exams a key point. Furthermore, the introduction of information and communication technology (ICT) and paperless systems are progressing globally, and are expected to continue to spread in the future.
In light of this background, Soka University has decided to partially switch from the conventional PBT (Paper-based Testing) method to a CBT method in order to improve convenience for examinees and meet their diverse needs. During the review period, careful consideration was given to examinees' PC literacy and security environment. In addition, considering that there are applicants from all over the country, the decision was made to introduce regional testing centers to create an environment where examinees can take the exam near their residence.
Prometric Japan Co., Ltd. has over 30 years of experience administering computer-based testing for national exams and various qualification exams, and was selected from among several other companies to administer this exam because of its ability to provide a strict security environment and a high level of fairness.
Comment from the Admissions Center, Admissions Office, Soka University
"Because our university has applicants from all over the country, it was necessary to hold the exam at a local testing center. Also, due to the nature of university entrance exams, it was essential that the exam be held on the same date and at the same time to ensure a high level of security. Prometric has a good understanding of the nature of university entrance exams as mentioned above, and supported us to ensure security On the test day as much as possible without changing the exam format. Our university did not need to prepare new devices to administer the exam, and the fact that Prometric has a long track record of operating at its testing centers while maintaining security and fairness was also a factor in our selection. In the future, we will verify the CBT method of entrance exams and use it to lead to better entrance exam reforms."
Comment from James Hagenbuscher, CEO Prometric Japan Co., Ltd.
"Prometric is proud that Soka University will be conducting the 2025 general entrance examination (second term) at our test center using the CBT method. While CBT is becoming standard in academic fields overseas, its use in Japan has only just begun in recent years. We are confident that the introduction of CBT for Soka University's general entrance examination (second term) will lead to the spread of CBT in Japan in the future, and that we will be able to contribute to expanding test-taking opportunities and improving convenience."
Benefits of computer-based testing
The introduction of the CBT format will greatly improve convenience for both exam organizers and Candidate.
For the organizers, it is possible to precisely measure ability using a variety of question methods, and it also enables the centralized management and analysis of test data. Another advantage of introducing the CBT method is that it can significantly reduce the workload of the organizers by utilizing test centers with a uniform test environment and strict security measures.
On the other hand, with general ad-hoc tests, Candidate can choose the test date and time that suits Candidate within a predetermined period of time, and since the test is graded on a computer, Test Result are available accurately and immediately.
