Prometric introduces an automatic authentication system that uses AI to verify identity, and begins operation at the Ochanomizu Test Center attached to its headquarters
Prometric Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: James Hagenbuscher), Japan's largest provider of computer-based testing (CBT) and evaluation solutions, has announced that it will We have introduced an automatic Candidate authentication system at the reception desk and have begun operating it at the Ochanomizu Test Center attached to our headquarters.
This system uses Identification Document issued by public institutions such as driver's license, My Number Card, passport (issued by the Japanese government), and foreign resident card's IC chip or face photo on the face of the card. Candidate face is matched with the face of the test taker brought by the test taker using an AI engine to verify the test taker's identity, and Candidate is verified against the reservation information in the reservation system to authenticate the test taker. The detection rate for impersonation by another person is 99.99% in just over 10 seconds. This is the first attempt in Japan to introduce such an authentication system using AI at the reception desk of a test center where CBT is conducted. This is one of the initiatives that we took early on. In close partnership with the global IT vendor responsible for the implementation, Prometric has been jointly developing this authentication system for over a year, imagining various operational cases.
Traditionally, in reception operations at test centers, staff verify the identity of Candidate by checking the authenticity of Identification Document and visually comparing the face photo on the ticket with the examinee's face. This is a complex procedure that involves visually checking the information against the reservation information in the test reservation system to confirm that Candidate, which takes approximately 2 minutes for each Candidate This has led to queues of Candidate takers during the peak testing season for each exam, and has also placed a heavy workload on test center staff. The introduction of this authentication system will eliminate most of the burden on Candidate and test center staff, and will also help the organization hosting each test to prevent fraud, such as impersonation, through automatic authentication that does not involve human experience or knowledge. This will bring about a lot of good news, such as improving the fairness of exams and further increasing social confidence. Prometric believes that 100% automation of test reception will be possible in the near future if the spread of My Number cards, led by the Japanese government, progresses further.
Prometric Japan Co., Ltd. plans to complete the implementation of this certification system at Prometric directly managed test centers in Kawasaki, Nagoya, and Osaka by the end of the year, and then gradually roll it out to partner Test Center across the country. In addition, the idea is to significantly automate and digitize not only the reception process but also the entire operation of the test center, aiming to create a ``nearly unmanned (Note) fully digital test center.''
(Note: At least one staff member is always on hand to respond to equipment troubles or if you are unsure of how to operate the equipment.)
